CHAPTER FOUR

the great nightmare

Kiss peers into the darkness.

Seraphim warned her against leaving this alcove. She figured it was for her own safety.

Now, however…

He’s hiding something.

Her breath held, she starts making her way over to the entrance. Zane doesn’t stop her; instead, he falls into step beside her, his footfalls somehow just as quiet as hers despite his heavy boots. All he does is grab her elbow once they’ve reached the tree on the left side of the gate.

She glances back at him. He nods, cautious.

Then they both lean forward. Kiss places a hand against the tree’s rough bark to keep her balance as she tries to stay out of sight—and squints against the source of light not far from the entrance. It’s bright, it’s white, it’s moving.

White fire. Seraphim’s flames.

Or… no, not just his fire—of course, there are his wings and the crown encircling his head, but that’s not all: sprouting from the earth are flowers, shimmering like stardust, swaying slightly because of Seraphim’s motions as he reaches for a smaller person and then gathers them close.

A girl.

Kiss blinks, thrown. It’s an actual girl. With straight, honey-blond hair cascading down her shoulders like a waterfall. With ivory skin, the total opposite of Seraphim. Eyes that appear violet instead of simply blue, wide and staring. A tattered dress, the frayed edge of her skirt brushing her bare toes. She’s skinny but also slightly muscular, looking strong. Tall, although she seems smaller in the angel’s arms.

She slumps against him now, lowering her lashes as Seraphim whispers in her ear. He holds her to his chest protectively and keeps on murmuring things Kiss can’t hear from where she’s standing.

“What,” Zane breathes behind her, “is going on here?”

Kiss merely shakes her head—but freezes the instant Seraphim’s voice suddenly slithers toward them, speaking without even looking up: “I know you are watching.”

He sounds harsh, and yet… broken.

Vulnerable. Defeated.

Finally, finally the angel is no longer an intimidating king but rather just a man. Divine, yes. But somehow human, even though he’s never been one. Kiss swallows, studying him. She hesitates for several beats before taking a step forward.

Zane’s hold on her elbow tightens.

She turns to him and takes his hand off her arm. After giving his fingers a squeeze, she motions for him to stay back and starts to edge closer to Seraphim and the girl he is now laying down on the ground, in the bed of stardust flowers.

Coming to a halt near them, she briefly glances around—all she sees is a forest, a maze of dense trees with bare branches that are coated in glittering dust, creating a glowing canopy above her head; it seems impossible now how dark it had seemed from inside the alcove. Her attention settles back on the girl whose eyes have fallen closed, her long lashes sweeping across her cheekbones. Her face is thin and narrow, a bit harsh as if she’s endured times of both heartache and malnourishment, yet there is a certain sweetness about her.

“Who is she?” Kiss asks.
